Australian Irrigation Water Provider Benchmarking Project

Client:

Australian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage

Project Description:

Hydro Environmental was instrumental in developing the internationally renowned irrigation water provider benchmarking framework. Hydro Environmental was initially engaged by Australian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage (ANCID) in 1999 to prepare ANCID’s first annual Irrigation Water Provider Benchmarking Report (1998/99). Hydro Environmental subsequently prepared each of the annual benchmarking reports up until the 2005/06 report, after which National Water Commission took over the benchmarking reporting process.

Hydro Environmental’s involvement covered all aspects of the benchmarking process including the collection of the data, via a unique user-friendly data collection tool, storing of the data, processing of the data, and reporting of the data. This included the writing of a professionally published summary report and detailed technical report which contained a series of reporting tables and graphs.

The annual report captured data on up to 66 separate irrigation supply systems and reported on 69 performance indicators relating to environmental, operational, financial, water access, customer and social aspects of the irrigation water providers' businesses.

Through its work with ANCID, Hydro Environmental also worked closely with the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) in its international benchmarking endeavours.

Key Skills Applied:

Stakeholder consultation and engagement, knowledge management, irrigation practices, water accounting, water regulatory framework, project management, understanding of irrigation water provider business needs, benchmarking, performance indications, target setting, data management, report writing and communication.
